Numb

And then you find as the pain slips away
that you are alone in the wake of the tide.
You feel your mind to touch the old scrape,
and gentle fingers smooth a hurt pride.

And you can see why they all ran away
and you can feel the ebb of the whole in your heart
after you said you would stay
when others lied and left you held to the art.

And now you see, with the moon overhead,
that you have conquered and lived through the fright.
And when their crutches leave all others dead,
you survive due to pain-instilled might.

But don't look back, another moon comes;
and with it you find a new wave of fear.
Upon it rides danger, and the promise of fun
crashing down pain with a roar in your ear.
