Southbound

I wake up in the morning, & Fire up the gelding; It's a poor substitute but it will answer to the call The oats have gotten expensive and the vet bills are extensive but at least I'm done with mucking out the stalls.

I get on at a sign that says "Nashville" Dreamin' bout the Bluebird Cafe I'd like to put the pedal down and roll this horse right outta town but there's somethin in this city makes me stay

Getting off at Taylorsville I curse just like old sailors will Thinkin' bout the day that lies ahead That old man will scream again But his check's still good at L&N So tomorrow I will still roll out of bed

And get on at a sign that says "Nashville"...

Then will come the weekend In Cahoots with my freak friends Might smoke or drink or shoot a little pool Or backstage at Coyotes Gettin' wistful with the roadies Toasting, boasting, and telling tales out of school

And they'll get on at a sign that says "Nashville" Next stop, the Bluebird Cafe And I'd like to put the pedal down But I'd never make it past E-town; There's something in this city makes me stay

I get on at a sign that says "Nashville" And think how those three hours could just fly But there's work to do and bills to pay and I need more practice anyway But I'll meet you at the Bluebird by and by When I get off at a sign that says "Nashville"
