Somewhere in The City

for my quadell, upon looking out over new york city one day.

Somewhere in the city a telephone is ringing. Children play in open air as fire hydrants singing their watery worksongs watch them, and praise falls from the sky in the form of mirrored rays.

Somewhere in the city, a telephone is chiming. A woman buys a watch for a man who's two-timing; A heart doctor patiently nurses a drink Waiting for his date who is late and his heart sinks

And somewhere in the city you crawl On your knees in a bathroom stall with ketchup and mustard you cover the walls with a two-color sunset over niagara falls i'd rush out to find you, from new york to nepal all you have to do friend is call

Somewhere in the city, a telephone is ringing Adolescents kiss and his grandfather, flinging His ice to the brick walk barks out "break it up!" "let them have their youth" says grandma, taking his cup

Somewhere in the city, a telephone is quiet the night shift sleeps on; his daughter breaks her diet for one bite of berries, a belch and she's done then she strolls off to work, whistling "ain't we got fun?"

And somewhere in the city you crawl On your knees in a bathroom stall with ketchup and mustard you cover the walls with a two-color sunset over niagara falls i'd go headfirst in a barrel no matter how small, if only you'd give me a call...

Somewhere in the city, a telephone is singing A cop listens in, the victim's hands are wringing dejected, the suspect is led to his chair but children go on with their games, unawares

somewhere in the city, a telephone is busy the caller, looking down, grows understandably dizzy he never dreamed he would jump! it's so tall! but the millions never nothing; grasp is reach is all.

And somewhere in the city you crawl On your knees in a bathroom stall with ketchup and mustard you cover the walls with a two-color sunset over niagara falls i'd save you myself if i only had the balls but i didn't pick up when you called

and somewhere in the city a telephone is ringing
